What Type of Anesthesia is Used in Liposuction?

Although there are several types of anesthesia used during the liposuction procedure, not all surgeons will offer every one and not all are applicable to every type of surgery, or more specifically, to liposuction. There are basically four types of anesthesia: local, regional, conscious sedation, and general. Liposuction is generally performed using either general anesthesia or local anesthesia. The choice depends on your surgeon’s preferences and on how large an area you are having treated.

Local anesthesia numbs a small area and is most commonly used during smaller plastic surgical procedures. This is similar to the numbing shot you get in the dentist’s office. This shot often consists of lidocaine, but there are several local anesthetics that are used. A topical local anesthetic can also be applied to the skin to numb the skin.

What are the possible side effects of Liposuction?

With any cosmetic surgery, the liposuction procedure can carry minor side effects. Swelling, bruises and scarring may be visible immediately after your liposuction surgery. Post- liposuction swelling and post lipo lumpiness may not fade entirely for several months after your procedure. There may be some recovery time for your body to become accustomed to its new shape, curve and contour. Most liposuction patients are well pleased with their liposuction procedure results and do not find the lipo side effects debilitating.

Dr. Peers performs liposculpture in our state-of-the-art, Indiana-licensed outpatient surgery center in our office. The center is across from Goshen Hospital, where Dr. Peers has privileges.

What happens during a consultation for liposculpture?
During the consultation with Dr. Peers, you will be shown before and after photographs of previous liposculpture patients and given an idea of what results you can realistically expect. Any questions that you have will be answered and Dr. Peers who will discuss the benefits and risks of liposculpture to help you make an informed decision. Listening to some of our patients own stories might help you as well.

Can I do liposculpture if I live out-of-town?
Yes. Domestic and international patients are welcome. We have patients from all over. They have found our gentle caring approach to Liposculpture and Liposuction as compared to larger cities make the process a pleasant surprise. After your procedure, you will be given all the medications and garments that you need for your recovery. You will need to stay overnight at a local hotel so we can check your progress the next morning. Patient safety is our priority.
